My aim in “A Colorful Storm” is to explore the idea of transformation and change. I think this topic is especially prudent as we face global changes with climate and the warp speed of technological advances.
I start my paintings with layers and layers of thick paint - each layer of color telling its own story. As I scrap away those layers I find form, shape, and dynamic movement transforming the original layer into a completely new piece unrecognizable from where I started.
Most noticeable, throughout these works, are the scraped lines that form clear crisp paths over chaotic backgrounds. These paths take on an almost map-like quality that moves your eye around the piece - guiding you through it.
“A Colorful Storm” is dedicated to my beloved Grandmother, Mary Danforth Guy, who passed away while I was working on this show. Another touch point of change and transformation. Her effervescent spirit and love of the arts and design were hugely influential to me.
